CURRENT RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
Many members of RI APDA have participated or are currently participating in research studies at varies sites. We will now maintain a list of ongoing research studies that our available for those who are interested. As researchers make us aware of new studies they will be added to our website. For questions about participation in specific sites we have provided direct contact with the research site. For general questions about participating in any study please feel free to contact the APDA Information & Referral Center at 401-736-1046.
Remember, studies have very strict eligibilty requirements and each individual must meet these requirements in order to participate.
Butler Hospital Movement Disorder Center Studies:
Presently Butler Hospital Movement Disorder Center is recruiting subjects for the following studies on Parkinson's disease:
1) A MIchael J Fox Foundation sponsored trial of Inosine to try to slow disease progression.
2) An industry study of Pimavanserin, a non-dopamine blocking drug, for treatment of psychotic symptoms of PD. They are looking for patients with frequent hallucinations or delusion.
3) An industry sponsored study of Safinamide, another MAO-B inhibitor. They are looking for PD patients taking only a dopamine agonist (Pramipexole, Ropinerole) for their PD.

Memorial Hospital Medical Rehabilitation Center Studies:
Memorial Hospital Is are looking for people diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, between the ages of 45 and 79, and their spouses or caregivers to help us examine how Parkinson’s Disease and apathy (such as a loss of interest in activities) influence decision making. Brown University Laboratory of Neural Computation and Cognition Studies:
You are being invited to take part in a research study! The purpose of this project is to study your performance on a series of computerized tasks as it relates to learning and decision making. Your brainwaves may be recorded during your session! You are being invited to participate because you are healthy, 50 years of age or older, and have no medical history of head or brain injury, current or past mental/psychiatric disorders, history of drug or alcohol abuse. Verification of specific medications is required before participation.
Compensation will be provided for your participation lasting 1-2 hours. This study is being held on
University of Rhode Island
The University of Rhode Island invites you to participate in a research project investigating exercise and balance. Classes are designed to improve balance and strength for individuals with Parkinson's disease. The classes are held Monday and Friday from 12:30- 1:30PM and Tuesday from 1:00 to 2:00 PM at the Tootell Aquatics Center building at URI. To be eligible to participate in this study you must:
- have a primary clinical diagnosis of PD
- be between the ages of 50-80
- have a current severity of between Stage I and Stage III according to the Hoehn & Yahr scale
- Written approval from your primary health care provider to participate in hydrotherapeutic exercise
